Why I’m Writing a Series about Single Dads?
By Margaret Daley

It would be easier for me to write a series about single moms, but I wanted to tackle a series about single dads. My son is a single dad of two little girls. The past few years I’ve watched him deal with raising two girls on his own. It’s never easy when you are a single parent and I wanted to illustrate the trials and tribulation one can go through.

In this first story I threw an uncle who becomes guardian of his two nieces. He was a bachelor one day and a father the next when his brother died. The whole family had to adjust to a new situation and grieve at the same time. To up the stakes, like my son, I wanted the hero to deal with the opposite sex. It’s one thing for a man to relate to a boy and entirely different with a girl‑especially an extra emotional one.

I have two granddaughters about the ages of the little girls in The Firefighter Daddy. I had fun with some of the scenes and traces of real life are in a lot of the scenes—their love of animals, especially dogs and cats, their love of attempting to cook, their drama.

I had fun writing The Firefighter Daddy and look forward to more in this series. I have one single dad in the support group with a special needs child. With my background as a teacher of special needs, I wanted to address issues of raising a child with special needs.

If you have children or grandchildren or deal with kids, what is a funny incident you had with them?

Blurb for The Firefighter Daddy:
Firefighter Liam McGregory is used to staring down five alarm fires—but becoming a father to his two little nieces has him sending out a call for help. When the girls return a lost pup to its beautiful owner, Liam thinks widow Sarah Blackburn is just the person he needs—or who the children need. He's promised to never marry again. ' Sarah takes his deal: she'll watch his kids and he'll watch her menagerie of pets—but the new father is off-limits. But two determined little matchmakers can be hard to resist when they need a mom to make one big happy family…

Good for you. Single dads are too often ignored or sidelined IMHO. Almost invariably when single parents are portrated in fiction, it is mothers. Don't mean to disparage them, but there is another side as well.

Ruthy link
4/22/2016 02:56:28 pm

That's so true! Although I've done some single dad things, too, and I love 'em because fathers can be more unpredictable! And fun.... there's often a spontaneity they carry that moms don't have.

My son is a single dad and I see the things he has to go through. I figured single dads needed a voice.

My brother is a single dad. His son was two when his wife died a week after giving birth to their youngest son who died of heart problems when he was 10 days old just a few days after she died. I'm sure my brother has many stories. His son is now a senior in high school.

Jan, I'm so glad you came by! Oh my stars, what a crushing story. God love your brother, that's just so much to bear.

My September book features a hero who is a single dad to two little boys, "The First Gift" and "More Than a Promise" (just released) has a single dad with three sons.... and it's a tough, tough road. God bless single parents everywhere.

Jan, I'm so sorry to hear about your son's wife and baby. I'm sure he has stories to tell too.

Cheryl, they're so real. These days life can come through with significant blows, and it's just nice to read stories of folks overcoming the troubled sides, isn't it?

Margaret Daley
4/23/2016 07:19:12 pm

Cheryl, I so agree with Ruthy about life throwing you significant blows. My son's house recently burned down but he is safe and his daughters weren't there at the time.

Ruthy,

I, like so many others, love cowboy characters. I grew up watching Bonanza, and although I was never a fan of Dynasty, I'm looking forward to reading your new book. Thank you for participating in this scavenger hunt.

I used to work with a kid named Zackary who had severe Autism and wasn't talking. Over working with him for 6 months, one day he came in and I said Hi Zackary, my name is Halita. What's your name?

He replied My name Zackary. I got to show his mom this at the parent day at the school and she broke down in sobs because he hadn't talked ever. He was 5 years old.

Margaret Daley

Halite, I've written a book about a little boy with autism. I worked with quite a few when I was teaching. That's a neat story.

The funny thing that happened was I took all four of my boys(2-8) to McDonald's to meet Ronald McDonald. They had a stage setup outside and as we're standing I happen to look down at my 2year old, who had pulled his pants down, and was peeing in the grass. There were allot of people standing around and I was embarrassed. Thankfully everybody thought it was funny. Jenny

Hi Ruthy! Just wanted to drop in and say "hello" and thank you for being part of the Scavenger Hunt. Your new cowboy series sounds so good (I love cowboys!), and I'm hoping I get an opportunity to read them soon. Have a wonderful weekend!

I grew up with "Gunsmoke" on Saturday nights, "Wild Bill Hickok" and "The Rifleman" after school and many more westerns. My brother and I played Cowboys and outlaws , trading an old pair of cowboy boots back and forth. I loved Zane Grey books, Louis LaAmour, Ernest Haycox, and many other old western writers. I have been writing western stories for many years for my own entertainment and always love finding new authors! My husband and I live in western Ne, about 30 miles from Wyoming. Great history here!!!

I just love both yours (Ruth) and Margaret Daley's books so much. I have been slowly collecting both of your back lists since I haven't been reading love inspired books as long as you both have been writing them. Those tend to be quick reads and so I also enjoy your longer novels, as well. Ruth, you sang Margaret's praises, but I know your heart is just as lovely. I appreciate each of your commitments to the Lord in your writing and any time I see blog posts, etc.

"If you have children or grandchildren or deal with kids, what is a funny incident you had with them?"
Having to wait to finish putting my children's Christmas presents under the tree, I laid down when they did. Early, I heard two little voices: "Santa hasn't come." With my answer, "Jump back in bed! Hurry." A floorboard always creaks when you try to be quiet. Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House

When my oldest daughter was younger, she answered the phone one day when it rang. After she said hello, there was a pause and then she called out to me and said, "Mom, it's the FBI." When I took the phone from her, the lady on the other end was having a good laugh as she said, "Ma'am, we are NOT the FBI!" She then went on to explain what her group was. My daughter heard the initials the woman used for her company when she answered the phone and thought she'd heard "FBI." We all had a pretty good laugh.

Hi Ruthy! *waves* Margaret, your book sounds like it's make an adorable Hallmark movie. =D

My sister's an elementary education major so she's always posting stuff on her social media about her experiences that make me smile like this one:

"Me: Kensi (pseudonym), how old is your older sister?
Kensi: Nine. (puzzled) Why? Do you know her?

Me: (thinking). Uh, no. You told me you had an older sister when I asked about your family last week." XD
